Open call for proposals

DMF grants for Central America and Mexico

Key information

The Degrees Initiative is holding a call for proposals for scientists in Central America and Mexico interested in undertaking climate modelling research to understand how solar radiation modification (SRM) could affect their local climate. The closing deadline for applications is 31 August 2023 (23:59 British Summer Time).

Grants of up to USD 75,000 are available to support successful teams over 26 months as they carry out their research projects. Funding is only available for modelling studies that research any aspect of physical climate change or any climate impact. The Degrees Initiative is not prescriptive about the specific focus, methods, or outcomes of research projects.

Why apply for a DMF grant?

The Degrees Modelling Fund (DMF) is the first international SRM modelling fund and the first aimed exclusively at scientists in developing countries and emerging economies. It provides funding to support research project staffing costs as well as sundry costs such as open-access publishing fees, computer equipment, and participation in international conferences. Most importantly, successful applicants will join a diverse global research community which includes some of the world’s top SRM modelling experts. Teams get the opportunity to work closely with these experts and colleagues worldwide throughout the duration of their projects, benefiting from South–South and South–North collaboration and networking opportunities.

Eligibility

To be eligible for funding under the 2023 Central America and Mexico call for proposals:

  • Principal investigators should have a PhD and appropriate research experience.
  • All project team members (including principal investigators) must be citizens of a developing country or emerging economy AND work at a university or research institution in one of the following eligible countries:

Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama.

Full eligibility information is available in the application guidelines.

How to apply?

To apply, complete the electronic application form no later than 31 August 2023 (23:59 British Summer Time). Please read carefully the full application guide for further information before preparing your application.

Project proposals will be evaluated through a process of scientific peer review carried out by an independent panel. Applications that meet or exceed our standards of excellence will be invited for a short video interview. A selection committee will then make final decisions on the projects that will be funded—pending the successful completion of a due diligence process. To learn more about the selection process read the full application guidelines.

Applicants can expect to receive a decision on their application in September or October 2023, with projects expected to start in December.
