Studying the response of cyclones to SRM in the Southern Hemisphere

Host institution

Brazil Instituto de Recursos Naturais, Universidade Federal de Itajubá

Grant year

2023

Project summary

Cyclones are projected to increase in intensity and severity with climate change, causing dangerous winds and floods in coastal areas – yet almost no studies have evaluated the potential impacts of SRM on their behaviour. Prof. Michelle Simões Reboita’s Brazil-based team will explore the impact of climate change on cyclones in the southern hemisphere, and how SRM might affect that, and will look at the implications for southern African and South American coastlines. This work will provide important information to stakeholders in vulnerable areas such as the coasts of Uruguay, southern Brazil and southern Africa.

The team

Universidade Federal de Itajubá
Michelle Simões Reboita is a professor and researcher at the Federal University of Itajubá, Brazil, and is a coordinator of GPEPSA-UNIFEI, a study group in environmental practices. She has experience in synoptic meteorology and climate modelling, and is a member of the Regional Working Group on American Monsoons (WG-AMM), which is part of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP). She is also a member of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP – Italy). In collaboration with Prof. Rosmeri P da Rocha, she developed the first study on the simulation of cyclones using a regional climate model over the South Atlantic Ocean.
University of Cape Town & University of Augsburg
Windmanagda Sawadogo holds a PhD degree in Meteorology and Climate Science from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Nigeria. Since 2020, Windmanagda Sawadogo has been a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Augsburg, Germany. Windmanagda works in the field of climate impact research on renewable energy, drought, and related topics. He also participated in the first DECIMAL fellowships with the team in South Africa. He has led three peer-reviewed publications.
Universiade de São Paulo
Rosmeri Porfírio Da Rocha is a lecturer in atmospheric dynamics and climatology, based in the Department of Atmospheric Science, at the Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil. She is also the main point of contact for the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) South America regional climate simulations. Her areas of research include atmospheric numerical models, climatology, climate change, and studies relating to cyclonic activity over South America-the South Atlantic Ocean.
University of Cape Town
Romaric Odoulami is a junior researcher with the ACDI, which is an interdisciplinary research and training institute situated within the University of Cape Town. His research focuses on understanding climate change risks in Africa. He aims to improve African communities’ understanding and management of climate risks and to reduce their vulnerabilities by quantifying weather and climate extreme risks, their implications for human communities, and identifying ways to manage these risks. Romaric’s vision is to assess climate change risks from the perspective of those dealing with risk, by working collaboratively with practitioners to provide policymakers with robust tools to influence policy and practice.

Universidade de São Paulo
Natália Machado Crespo has a background in meteorology and has carried out research in the Ozone Laboratory of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Her research focuses on the dynamical and climatological aspects of cyclones over South America and its surrounding regions. Since 2019, she has undertaken post-doctoral research for the Western South Atlantic Climate Experiment (WeSACEx), becoming involved in regional climate modelling, evaluating the current climate and projections of extreme winds and cyclones over eastern South America, under different climate change scenarios.
Universidade Federal de Itajubá
João Gabriel Martins Ribeiro is a doctoral student at the Federal University of Itajubá, Brazil. He works on projects focused on the analysis of climate change scenarios in Brazil and their effects on the availability of renewable energy resources. He has experience in climate modelling, processing climatic data, and Mesoscale/Synoptic meteorology. In collaboration with Prof. Michelle Simões Reboita, he works on statistical downscaling to refine input data for comparisons with climate projections.
