Studying tropical cyclone-related extreme rainfall in Indonesia

Host institution

Diponegoro University

Grant year

2023

Project summary

Tropical cyclones and typhoons can have a devastating effect in Indonesia, causing loss and damage to life, property and the surrounding environment, due to high rainfall, storm surges, and aftershocks. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) has observed strengthening storm surges and heavy rainfall along the Bird’s Head Papua coast and small islands, creating significant challenges for coastal management. Prof. Rahmat Gernowo, of Diponegoro University, is leading a team to investigate their shifting impact on affected areas due to climate change, as well as how the deployment of SRM might affect their behaviour. This work will mark an important step in increasing understanding of the potential effects of SRM in the western Pacific.

The team

Diponegoro University
Rahmat Gernowo is based in the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, at the University of Diponegoro. His research focuses on atmospheric physics studies and atmospheric dynamics, and his work has been published in national and international journals.
dr sorja koesuma profile
Sebelas Maret University
Sorja Koesuma is a researcher and consultant on regional and national level community-based disaster risk assessment and management. Since 2010, he has been based at the Disaster Research Centre at Sebelas Maret University, and since 2015 has also been active in the disaster-related community organisation, the University Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (UF-DRR). Other areas of expertise include geophysics, especially near-surface geophysics, groundwater research, and satellite altimetry.
University of Papua
Hendri Hendri holds a doctorate from Hiroshima University and is currently teaching at the University of Papua. His research interests include modelling related to hydrometeorological disasters and the Regional Environmental Simulator (RES), environmental modelling approach which uses complex interactions between land surfaces, the atmosphere, wind, waves, the ocean, and estuaries. He has collaborated with a range of institutions, including international NGOs, government agencies, private organisations and universities, to jointly build a framework and models for climate change mitigation and adaptation in small islands and sustainable smart development.
