Degrees Socio-Political Fund

In 2023, the Degrees Initiative kick-started a pioneering new fund for solar radiation modification (SRM) research in the social sciences. The Degrees Socio-Political Fund marks a major expansion of Degrees’ work, becoming the first-ever fund aimed exclusively at researchers in the Global South to study the social and political dimensions of SRM.

The Socio-Political Fund follows in the footsteps of the Degrees Modelling Fund, which was the first SRM research fund aimed exclusively at developing countries. Five years after it was launched, the Degrees Modelling Fund is changing the face of SRM research.

We hope that the Socio-Political Fund will have a similar impact. To date, there has been very little social science research looking at SRM in the Global South. Developing countries will be most affected by any decision to use or reject SRM, so Southern experts should be central to the conversation.

What the fund does

The Socio-Political Fund will provide grants of up to USD 45,000 for teams or USD 25,000 for individual researchers in the Global South, supporting them to investigate the social and political dimensions of SRM. The Degrees Initiative is not prescriptive about the specific research question, methods, or outcomes of projects, and additional funding may be awarded on a competitive basis.

Applications to the fund are currently being assessed, and inaugural projects will be announced in the first half of 2024. A research planning workshop is set to be held in May 2024, where new social science research collaborators and members of the Degrees team will work with the successful applicants to refine their proposals. We look forward to updating this page after the new projects are announcedwatch this space.

History of the DMF

The Degrees Modelling Fund  (DMF) was launched in 2018 as the DECIMALS Fund (Developing  Country Impacts Modelling Analysis for SRM). In 2022, DECIMALS was renamed the Degrees Modelling Fund.

The DMF is a partnership between The Degrees Initiative and TWAS, The World Academy of Sciences. The DMF would not have been possible without their expert guidance and hard work.
