Degrees Modelling Fund (DMF)

The fund

The Degrees Modelling Fund (DMF) is the first international SRM modelling fund and the first aimed exclusively at scientists in developing countries.

The DMF is the largest SRM research initiative in the world by number of scientists, comprising more than 79 researchers working across 11 projects in 10 developing countries. It has disbursed over $900,000 in research grants.

What the DMF does

The Degrees Modelling Fund provides grants to research teams in developing countries who want to understand how SRM could affect their local climate.

New projects are selected via an open call for proposals and a process of independent peer review. Applicants are free to define their own research questions and methods for answering them – the Degrees Initiative does not tell teams what to study or how to do it.

DMF research projects

Eleven teams have been awarded DMF research grants to date. The projects are exploring how SRM could affect, amongst other things, dust storms across the Middle East, droughts in Southern Africa, the spread of cholera in South Asia.

The teams are working with data generated by large climate model runs such as the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP) or the NCAR Geoengineering Large Ensemble (GLENS).

Research Collaborators

DMF teams are paired with some of the world’s leading SRM modelling experts to increase international cooperation around SRM research and to build a global community of experts.

History of the DMF

The Degrees Modelling Fund  (DMF) was launched in 2018 as the DECIMALS Fund (Developing  Country Impacts Modelling Analysis for SRM). In 2022, DECIMALS was renamed the Degrees Modelling Fund.

The DMF is a partnership between The Degrees Initiative and TWAS, The World Academy of Sciences. The DMF would not have been possible without their expert guidance and hard work.
