Degrees Science Advisor Pete Irvine highlighted the need for more SRM expertise in the Global South at the World Government Summit (WGS) in Dubai, UAE, from 13 – 15 February 2023.
Noting that the Global South had the most to gain or lose from SRM decisions, he said Degrees’ goal was to ‘build a body of knowledge and expertise that is centred in developing nations, so that they can advise their governments to help them form evidence-informed views on this topic, to make up their own minds whether they want to reject or support it’.
The panel, titled Global Governance of Large-scale Climate Change Mitigation Technologies, included:
- Lloyd Whitman (Moderator) – Senior Director, Atlantic Council
- Janos Pasztor – Executive Director, Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative (C2G)
- Peter Irvine – Science Advisor, The Degrees Initiative, Lecturer in Climate Change and Solar Geoengineering, University College London (UCL)
- Sophie Hildebrand – Chief Technology Officer, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC)
