Proceedings: US National Academies workshop on SRM research governance

In September 2019, our Project Director Andy Parker was invited to present to the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s panel on SRM governance. His comments were published recently in the session proceedings. Reflecting on his experiences working on SRMGI (The Degrees Initiative), Andy argued that building developing country capacity to evaluate SRM should be seen as a crucial prerequisite for good governance. Without local SRM expertise, developing countries would be relegated to approving or opposing governance proposals designed in wealthy nations, he said, rather than playing an integral role in drafting and negotiation. An expert committee of the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is in the process of finalising a report on SRM research and its governance.
