Modelling

Implications of marine cloud brightening for climate and malaria dynamics in South Asia

Host institution COMSATS University Islamabad
Grant year 2023

Project summary

Vector-born diseases, such as malaria, can be particularly sensitive to a changing climate, creating new risks for millions of people in malaria endemic countries. Building on previous work on solar radiation modification (SRM) under stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI), this project extension will assess the potential impacts of Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB) on malaria transmission in climate-vulnerable South Asia. Using modeled precipitation and temperature at daily resolution and the VECTRI malaria model, the study will estimate malaria risks under MCB and compare them to SAI and climate change scenarios. This research addresses a critical knowledge gap, producing spatial risk maps and data-driven insights to guide public health planning and stakeholder engagement in the region.
