It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Professor Laban Ogallo on 20 November 2020. Laban served as one of the three SRMGI co-chairs from 2017 to 2020 and helped guide the expansion of the initiative in 2018. Born in Kenya in 1950, Laban was a pioneer of climate science and meteorology in Africa. Over a long and distinguished career he served as Founding Director of the IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Center, Chief Executive of the Kenya National Council for Science and Technology, and Professor of Meteorology at the University of Nairobi. He was a member of the IPCC team that received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 and his scientific achievements led to his election as a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Kenya Academy of Sciences, the African Academy of Sciences and Kenyan Meteorological Society. We are grateful for his kindness, expertise, and his hard work with us, and we would like to send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
