For the first time, Degrees-funded modelling and socio-political teams came together to discuss the state of SRM science and governance in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region.
The meeting reflects Degrees’ emphasis on connecting diverse expertise and perspectives on SRM to ensure inclusive, region-led research. Taking place 14 – 15 October 2025 in Bogotá, Colombia, the workshop gathered ten research teams from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Jamaica, and Mexico. It expanded on a kick-off meeting held in August 2024, where SRM modelling scientists discussed their research, provided ideas and shared feedback.
The launch of the Socio-Political Fund in 2024 included four teams from the LAC region, so the latest workshop also brought these researchers into the discussion of how the region can collaborate to identify and answer pressing questions about climate and SRM. This is the first time Degrees-funded modelling and socio-political researchers have held a combined workshop in any region.
Participants from ten teams across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Jamaica discussed issues with data availability and how this could be overcome, plus consideration of creating a regional hub in the future to pool knowledge and coordinate collaborative studies.
There were also sessions covering how decisions are adopted by UN bodies and what shared outputs might look like, such as regional reports on the state of SRM science and governance.
One participant said: “This workshop was an excellent starting point to build collaborations between the modelling and the social science teams. Looking into the future I would like to see more initiatives like this aimed at strengthening a holistic approach to SRM.”
