Degrees seeks to expand SRM research support to new countries

The Degrees Initiative is running a new sponsor-based call for proposals until 1 March 2025 to support climate modelling studies on SRM in more countries of the Global South. Teams without a sponsor can submit an expression of interest until 29 January.

Degrees has funded modelling studies in more than 20 countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America since 2018. As this community grows, established teams are playing an increasingly important role in bringing new researchers to the field.

In this special call for proposals, Degrees aims to fund new modelling teams in countries and especially regions where we do not currently fund such projects. Each team should be sponsored by a Principal or Co-Principal Investigator from an established modelling research team who will enable them to quickly get up to speed and produce results relevant to their regions.

Eligible scientists who are interested in carrying out SRM research but do not have a sponsor are still encouraged to submit a short statement of interest and their CV by 29 January. Degrees will review these and, if appropriate, try to match applicants with potential sponsors.

Proposals can seek to study any aspect of physical climate change or climate impacts, including extreme weather, health, food and water security, sea-level change or biodiversity and ecosystems. This allows teams to focus on questions that are relevant to their country, exploring how SRM could affect their local climate and how its impacts compare to those of a warmed world. For example, recent studies have investigated glacier melt in the Andes (by our Chile 2023 team) and water deficit in Central Africa (by our Cameroon 2023 team).

Full proposals will be evaluated based on the strength of the research question, proposed methods, research team experience and project feasibility.
