Developing an integrated climate-economy stakeholder-based model for SRM impacts
Project summary
This research project aims to critically assess global perspectives on Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) a proposed climate solution involving reflecting solar energy to cool the planet by focusing on Brazil, India, and South Africa. While SRM offers a potential solution to mitigate global warming, it presents significant concerns regarding potential physical side effects and complex ethical and governance issues. We will utilise System Dynamics (SD) models in participatory workshops with diverse stakeholders to develop qualitative causal loop models that illustrate the shared understanding around SRM’s interactions with climate, economic, and social factors. By investigating diverse national attitudes regarding SRM’s risks, costs, threats, and benefits, this research will reveal how these perceptions shape national strategies. Ultimately, the findings will promote cross-country learning and contribute essential socio-political insights to informed decision-making and the development of responsible, fair SRM governance frameworks.
